CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Ro16 - 2nd LEG: Atletico edge PSV on penalties

Atletico Madrid are through to the quarter-finals of the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League after beating PSV Eindhoven on penalties.

Diego Simeone's Rojiblancos got past the Dutch club 8-7 in a tense shootout after being held to a 0-0 draw by Phillip Cocu's men at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

The initial encounter in Holland last month also produced a scoreless stalemate as the two-legged tie was sent to penalties after 30 minutes of extra-time in Spain.

During regular time, Atletico had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock when Antoine Griezmann was found just inside the penalty area but the French forward saw his close range effort brilliantly blocked by PSV keeper Jeroen Zoet.

Later in the half, Zoet again came up with a quality save to again deny Griezmann, this time with a header, before PSV were desperately unlucky when Jurgen Locadia's 58th-minute effort hit the upright before the deflection worked out kindly for Atletico and keep Jan Oblak.

In the 84th minute, Fernando Torres found space on the left side of the box but could only fire his left-footed effort into the frame of the goal with Zoet standing tall before referee Mark Clattenburg blew the whistle for full-time.

There was little to speak about in terms of chances during the extra 30 minutes which subsequently brought about the dreaded spot-kick contest.

Atletico required penalties to get past Bayer Leverkusen at this stage last season before losing 1-0 to Real Madrid in the quarters and once again held their nerve to win when Juanfran converted after Luciano Narsingh had fired into the crossbar following 14 successful efforts from 12 yards prior.

Atletico's penalty scorers were Griezmann, Gabi, Koke, Saul Niguez, Torres, Jose Gimenez, Filipe Luis and of course Juanfran, while PSV had Marco van Ginkel, Andres Guardado, Davy Propper, Jeffrey Bruma, Hector Moreno, Maxime Lestienne and Santiago Arias all beat Jan Oblak.

Alter are now into the final eight of Europe's elite competition where they join local rivals Real as well as Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Benfica and Wolfsburg with two matches between Barcelona and Arsenal, and Bayern Munich and Juventus, to take place on Wednesday.
