CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Real Madrid high five Legia Warsaw

Real Madrid asserted their authority on Group F in the Champions League with a commanding victory on Tuesday night.

Los Blancos hammered Polish side Legia Warsaw 5-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu to put them in pole position, along with Borussia Dortmund, in the group table.

On a night where Cristiano Ronaldo failed to add to his burgeoning bag of continental goals, Zinedine Zidane's men dominated proceedings to follow up their 6-1 slaughter of Real Betis in La Liga on the wekeend.

Gareth Bale kicked things off in the 16th minute when he brilliantly cut in from the right before unleashing into Arkadiusz Malarz's bottom right corner for his 13th Champions League goal.

Madrid were two to the good just three minutes later when Marcelo's effort on goal deflected wickedly in off Tomasz Jodlowiec, before Legia pulled one back when Miroslav Radovic converted from the penalty spot after he had been felled in the area by Raphael Varane.

But Real were soon back to a two-goal lead through Champions League debutant Marco Asensio who got on the end of a clever ball from Ronaldo to fire home emphatically in the 37th minute.

The home side had to wait over 30 minutes for their next goal but it was worth the wait as Lucas Vazquez rasped a first-time volley through the legs of Malarz from Alvaro Morata's pinpoint cross.

There was time for one more for the Spanish giants and it came in the 84th minute when Morata was the recipient of another sublime touch and pass from Ronaldo, which allowed the Spanish striker to angle home a well-taken effort.

The victory has Zidane's outfit sitting on seven points from three matches, alongside Dortmund, with their next European fixture to take place in Warsaw on November 2 when the Germans welcome third-placed Sporting Lisbon.
