Diego Simeone has likened Atletico Madrid's defeat in the Champions League final to a death.
Los Rojiblancos were beaten by arch rivals Real Madrid in the decider of Europe's premier club competition by virtue of a penalty shootout in Milan in late May.
It was Atleti's second loss to Real in the Champions League final in three seasons and according to Simeone, he has only just recently recovered from the enormous disappointment.
"I've had a lot of thoughts but only a short time to speak to you today," he said.
"I never spoke of the feelings that I had, they are difficult to explain, but for me that loss was like a death.
"And after any death there is a period of grieving which is now over."
Regarding the season ahead, Simeone was full of positivity when addressing the media in Melbourne prior to their International Champions Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Friday.
"I think that we have a strong team, we are enthusiastic, we have big hopes," he added.
"We have improved the work we are doing at the club, and above all, as a team.
"I believe we are strong and we are keen to work hard in the pre-season. We have what we need to reach our potential."
