CHAMPIONS LEAGUE – Group E: Basel complete Chelsea double

FC Basel have beaten Chelsea for the second time in the Champions League this season.

FC Basel have beaten Chelsea for the second time in the Champions League this season.

The Swiss champions, who produced a late show to defeat the Blues 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in September, have repeated the dose at St Jakob-Park but this time with a narrow 1-0 victory.

Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the closely contested affair when he raced down the right after receiving a long ball from Fabian Schar before firing beyond Petr Cech in the 87th minute.

Jose Mourinho’s Blues were unable to get a single shot on target throughout in what could be classified as a flaccid performance but nevertheless, they booked their ticket to the Round of 16 after Steaua Bucharest drew 0-0 with Schalke.

Chelsea meet bottom-placed Steaua on Matchday 6 in southwest London on December 11 meaning they are through regardless of their result and that of the Schalke v Basel meeting on the same date.
