CHAMPIONS LEAGUE – Group D: Man City in disarray as Ajax stand tall

Manchester City’s Champions League campaign is in tatters after they were beaten 3-1 by Ajax in Amsterdam tonight.

The reigning Premier League champions opened the scoring against the run of play in the 22nd minute when Samir Nasri received a pass from James Milner to slot home clinically over Ajax keeper Kenneth Vermeer.

However, Ajax managed to restore parity on the stroke of half-time when Siem de Jong hammered home after Gareth Barry was unable to cut out Ricardo van Rhijn’s fierce drive across goal.

The home side then produced more efficiency in attack when Niklas Moisander glanced a header from a corner past Joe Hart before Christian Eriksen wrapped up the contest with just over 20 minutes with a deflected shot off Gael Clichy.

Ajax thoroughly deserved the victory which sees them climb off the bottom of the Group D table, sending City to the bottom on just one point as Borussia Dortmund leapt to the top as they got the better of Real Madrid 2-1 in Germany.
