An early Champions League exit for Liverpool would hit the club's bank balance hard.
Liverpool earned more than £22.3 million in prize-money and media revenue from Uefa by reaching the Champions League final last season, when they were beaten by AC Milan in Athens, and claimed a slightly smaller fee, £21.2 million, as winners two years earlier. In both cases the overall revenue from the European runs were estimated to be more than £30 million once gate receipts and assorted commercial spin-offs were taken into account.
