CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: APOEL through to quarters after penalties win over Lyon

APOEL Nicosia have created history by becoming the first Cypriot club to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The home side scored the only goal of tonight's match in Nicosia following the 1-0 victory to Olympique Lyon in the first leg in France to make it 1-1 on aggregate after the regular 90 minutes and a further 30 of extra-time.

APOEL managed to triumph in the ensuing penalty shootout to book their place in the final eight of Europe's premier club competition, creating more misery for Lyon who have fallen to seventh in Ligue 1.

After Alexandre Lacazette helped Lyon to win their home leg 1-0 in France, APOEL leveled the scores inside ten minutes when Gustavo Manduca got on the end of a low Constantinos Charalambidis to slot home from close range.

Both sides had plenty of shots on target throughout but there were not many out-and-out scoring chances as the match was forced into extra-time, where APOEL had goalscorer Manduca sent off for a second bookable offence, and then the nerve-wracking shootout.

Lyon's second penalty, taken by Lisandro, hit the upright and then bounced back off Dionisis Chiotis but the APOEL keeper came up with two huge saves to deny Lacazette and then Michel Bastos and send his side through to the next phase much to the delight of the home fans.
