Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson is relaxed over Peter Houston being appointed manager on a permanent basis. "It's easy to see that being third in the league and winning the Scottish Cup, he's obviously capable of doing the job," Thompson told BBC Scotland.

"He wants the job and I'm not speaking to anyone else, so I think that says a lot in itself.

"Hopefully, we can resolve things in the next few days."

Houston became caretaker in December and initially indicated he did not want the job on a permanent basis after his side suffered a 7-1 hammering by Rangers in his second game in charge.

But, after Houston carried on in his caretaker role, United went on to finish nine points ahead of fourth-top Hibernian in the Scottish Premier League and ended the season by defeating Ross County 3-0 in Saturday's Scottish Cup final.

"We've got a few bits and pieces to sort out," said Thompson, stressing that he and Houston had always planned to leave negotiations until the end of the season.

"I don't think there's anything that's going to be a major problem.

"We've already spoken this morning about pre-season and that kind of thing - that's the way we're both talking.

"We spoke this week about a couple of players, possible players to come in. So we're talking as though we're both working together next year.

"I'd like to think it'll happen. I'd like to think I'll be able to speak to you again about Peter in a few days time as manager."
