Celtic's McDonald out of World Cup qualifier

The 24-year-old ended a six-game goal drought, netting his 20th of the season to put Celtic on course for a 3-0 defeat of Gretna on Sunday and had seemed set to start for the Socceroos in Kumning.

But McDonald will now not travel to China and is doubtful for the Scottish Premier League match with Rangers next weekend.

"We had to take him off because he picked up a calf strain and when you have something like that it doesn't help you to be on a plane for that length of time," Celtic boss Gordon Strachan told BBC Scotland.

"He has made a phone call and will not be going."
