Celtic's Ambrose eyeing Wanyama vacancy

Efe Ambrose suggests he is the man to replace Victor Wanyama in the heart of the Celtic midfielder.

The Nigerian centre-back was deployed in the centre of the pitch for the weekend's friendly win over Brentford and says he may spend more time there now Wanyama has left for Southampton on a £12.5million deal.

"The manager hinted at the end of last season I could play in midfield if Victor departs," Ambrose told SunSport.

"This would be to make up for the loss of Victor's man-marking skills and ability to retain the ball.

"The midfield role is nothing new to me. I have played there for my other clubs and with Nigeria.

"If I am called upon by the coach, I am willing to fill in at any role and I am ready to give my best.

"I am not denying the fact that there have been enquiries from other clubs, but I am focused on Celtic.

"My loyalty lies with Celtic. I want to remain here to repay the fans, the coach and the club for believing in me.

"It's all about the team and bringing joy to the Celtic fans."

A further indication that Ambrose may play midfield more often is that Hoops boss Neil Lennon has signed central defenders Virgil van Dijk and Steven Mouyokolo this summer.
