Celtic's van Dijk looking to vindicate Holland departure

Virgil van Dijk has revealed that he received some criticism for deciding to join Celtic earlier this summer.

The 22-year old Dutch defender left Eredivisie club FC Groningen to join the Hoops but people in his homeland felt he was crazy for moving to Glasgow.

However, van Dijk is comfortable with his decision and is looking to vindicate his shift to Celtic by performing at his in the Champions League this season against Dutch giants Ajax, Spanish powerhouse Barcelona and Italian leviathan AC Milan.

"Yes, there were those who doubted the move. People said the league was not so good but they don't watch the Scottish league," he told the Daily Record.

"I'm playing here now, I'm very happy and I think the Champions League shows I've made the right move.

"Since the draw it's been an unbelievable response and it's a dream come true to get Barcelona, AC Milan and Ajax.

"It's a very tough draw and this is my very first time playing in the Champions League but this group is unbelievable, I like it and I can't wait to play in it.

"If you play well then people will know all about you. You never know in the Champions League. Everything is possible. We have to stick together and work hard."
