Celtic no.2 Mjallby plays down Lennon/ref rift

Celtic assistant boss Johan Mjallby said perhaps people got a bit carried away when Neil Lennon had a word and a gesture with the referee in Saturday's friendly in Spain.

The Hoops drew 0-0 with La Lia outfit Athletic Bilbao in a tune-up match whilst the international break is on but for some it wasn't all that friendly with manager Neil Lennon being sent from the pitch by match official Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez.

Lennon appeared to shout at Gonzalez before making a gesture after he felt a free-kick had been missed in the 32nd minute and was then dismissed.

But Mjallby felt it was a bit of an overreaction from both parties and hopes Lennon is not suspended for the third time this season.

"I think Neil shouted at the referee that he felt it was a free-kick. Then, maybe, he gestured, like you always do during a game when you think something is wrong," the Swede said.

"Maybe that's why the referee reacted.

"I don't know how things go when it comes to referee reports. But I would be surprised if he even writes anything.

"At the end of the day it was a friendly and you could see around the stadium that the supporters were a bit surprised.

"I was surprised. I didn't react.

"At first I was sitting down and I was surprised that they had a wee coming together.

"Neil, more or less, mentioned to the referee that he was a bit upset that he didn't give us a free-kick. We felt it was.

"I felt the referee completely over-reacted. He is not an inexperienced referee. I had him many times when I played for Sweden.

"It's hard for me to say what he thought at that moment. But I definitely think he over-reacted. It was nothing. Neil just felt it was a free-kick and he told him that.

"Then suddenly the referee wanted Neil to sit up in the stand.

"I'm not aware of Neil speaking to the referee after the game. The matter is definitely closed."
