Celtic defender Matthews facing three months on sidelines

Celtic defender Adam Matthews could be sidlined for up to three months with a broken collarbone.

The Welshman was taken to hospital during the Hoops’ 2-0 win over Motherwell after landing awkwardly in a challenge with Keith Lasley which prompted manager Neil Lennon to fear the worst.

“My initial fears are it could be a fractured collarbone. If that’s the case then he could be out for three months,” Lennon said after the match.

“It puts a negative on what has been a great day.

“I thought it was a penalty. He has taken Adam’s leg first then followed through on the ball. I don’t blame Lasley – it’s more down to Adam falling awkwardly.”

Despite the negative aspect of Matthews’ injury, Celtic returned to the top of the Scottish Premier League table with their seventh win from eight league outings so far this campaign.
