Celtic coach Thompson: Title not tainted

Celtic’s Alan Thompson has made it clear that he believes this season’s Scottish Premier League title will not be tainted.

The Hoops need just one point at Kilmarnock today to clinch the 2011/12 Premiership but some critics feel that the 10-point deduction to Rangers for falling into administration has taken the gloss off the imminent achievement.

However, Hoops coach Thompson is not having any of that after seeing his side overcome a big deficit to their Old Firm rivals to now sit 18 points clear at the summit.

“Tainted titles? Absolutely no chance of that. We were 15 points behind and we turned that deficit around,” Thompson said.

“Regardless of the ten-point deduction, we’d still be eight points ahead at the minute and in pole position. It will not be tainted for us. It might be for others.

“I think it’s some achievement, regardless of what people say.

“To turn it around the way we have, I think, is a credit to the club.

“It has been a long season, nine-and-a-half months. We’ve been back in training since the middle of June.

“So if we do it, it will be fantastic and everyone will deserve credit from the manager down to the backroom staff, kit men, everyone. A lot of work has gone in at the club.”
