Gordon Strachan has nipped in ahead of Old Firm rival Walter Smith to sign the 24-year-old centre-half.

While Cardiff boss Dave Jones had been keen to hang onto Loovens, the deal nevertheless represents excellent value for money for the Welsh side who had initially signed the Dutchman for £250,000 from Feyenoord.
