Liverpool owners, New England Sports Ventures, have appointed global headhunters Spencer Stuart to begin a worldwide search for the club's new chief executive. Their brief is to find "business leaders with an interest in, and experience of, football" according to a statement from NESV.
Principal owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner will be responsible for appointing Liverpool's new CEO, which they hope will be early in the new year.
One of the early favourites for the post is Peter Lawwell, the chief executive of Celtic, who turned down a similar position at Arsenal in 2008.
Lawwell is in his second spell with the Hoops after joining them in 1990 as a financial controller.
He left the club and held senior positions in Mining Scotland and Clydeport before returning to Parkhead in November 2003 as Chief Executive.
However, when the Gunners came calling his allegiance to Celtic was too strong and pledged his long-term future to the Scottish club.
Whether he still feels the same way should the opportunity arise again to move to one of the top four teams in the Premier League remains to be seen.
