Released Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla admits he could yet hang up the boots before the start of next season.
Cazorla will do preseason with Villarreal in an effort to win a contract.
But he told AS: "I know there is a lot of enthusiasm, that gives me a lot of strength and a lot of joy. That's why I want people to know that I'm going to compete at the highest level and at the moment I cannot do it, I'll be the first to leave. If I cannot contribute, I will not be there, I do not want to deceive anyone, least of all Villarreal.
"Look, when I left Arsenal and seeing how things were, the people of the club told me not to obsess, that the best thing was to play in a minor league, with less demand. A minor league, like the United States or so. But I told them that I wanted to play at the highest level and in Europe. And the best was Villarreal."
Cazorla added: "I know the team well, I always follow them and I know everything there is to know. In addition Villarreal plays how I play, it's perfect for me, there is no better place. The best place to start again is Vila-real and Villarreal."
