Carver confirmed as job rumours continue at Newcastle

Newcastle United's decision to confirm caretaker manager John Carver to the end of the season has not ended speculation regarding the Toon job.

The club's managing director Lee Charnley informed Carver of their decision on Sunday, with the Geordie to remain in charge of United's final 16 matches of the Premier League campaign.

Charnley and chief scout Graham Carr, who have both been tasked with finding the next manager by club owner Mike Ashley, will now wait until the summer to make a permanent appointment.

Derby County boss Steve McClaren is regarded as their favourite, though Charnley and Carr are yet to interview the former England coach.

The pair have spoken to out of work, former Lyon coach Remi Garde and odds on Bernd Schuster becoming new coach tumbled last week as it broke he was due to interview for the job last week.

The former Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid boss was linked with Newcastle last week, which saw a flood of money put on the German to become the next Newcastle manager.

Fans can influence the news in such cases, with Schuster's situation making headlines around the world as the odds were slashed thanks to betting. Companies such as William Hill Online will carry odds for all manner issues and games. And when fans bet on football with William Hill Online, it can effect the news of the day.

Schuster and McClaren are not alone in being under consideration at St James' Park, as the shortlist contains several currently in-work coaches including Frank de Boer of Ajax and Christope Gaultier of St Etienne while Thomas Tuchel is currently contracted to Bundesliga outfit Mainz.
