Liverpool have confirmed on their official website that Newcastle have accepted a club-record offer for striker Andy Carroll. The statement reads: "Liverpool FC confirmed this afternoon that Newcastle United had accepted a Club record offer for the transfer of Andy Carroll.
"The Club have been given permission by Newcastle to discuss personal terms with the player, who will now travel to Liverpool for a medical."
This could now pave the way for Liverpool to sell Fernando Torres to Chelsea before the end of the transfer deadline.
It appears Andy Carroll stunned Newcastle by handing in a transfer request, which the club reluctantly accepted along with an offer in excess of £30m for the England striker.
Newcastle confirmed the development in a statement: "A British record transfer fee has been agreed between Newcastle United and Liverpool for Magpies striker Andy Carroll.
"The 22-year-old England international has this afternoon handed in a transfer request, which has reluctantly been accepted by the club, and Carroll is currently in talks with the Reds over a move to Anfield."
Carroll is currently nursing a thigh injury, but he is set to undergo a medical before finalising a move to Anfield.
