Carrick on Man Utd mate Rooney: All the spotlight. All the scrutiny. Still going strong

Michael Carrick has paid tribute to teammate and Manchester United record-breaker Wayne Rooney.

Rooney managed to surpass Sir Bobby Charlton to become United's all-time leading goalscorer with his last minute strike in the 1-1 draw against Stoke City on Saturday and the 31-year-old has been widely praised by the footballing community for his fantastic 250-goal achievement.

Now teammate Carrick has gone on to heap praise on Rooney and has stated that the striker completing such a feat despite all the scrutiny placed on him throughout his career, makes the achievement even more remarkable.

Carrick told BBC Radio 5 Live: "To play at the level he has done for so long, since he was 16/17 years old when he burst on the scene, not just club but for his country as well.

"You can't underestimate how tough it is to play so many games and have that scrutiny in the spotlight on you constantly.

"How he has dealt with that and how he has answered back and how he has shut people up over the years when they have questioned him, and he's still going strong today."
