Carrick knows improvement is a must for Man Utd

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is well aware the team has to improve if they are to get through to the next phase of the Champions League.

The 2007/08 champions of Europe drew 0-0 with Olympique Marseille at Stade Velodrome on Wednesday night and Carrick knows that a better performance is required to qualify for the quarter-finals phase.

"We're a bit disappointed with the performance but it's about winning at home. We're confident we can do that but we need to play better," he told ITV1.

"Any game away in Europe is a difficult game, but we didn't play anywhere near our best. We have an opportunity to put it right back at Old Trafford.

"It wasn't quite happening for us, our passing wasn't great and we didn't create many chances. We defended well, it's just the other side - our attacking and possession has got to be better.

"Our record is good at home but we have to play better."
