Jamie Carragher admits Liverpool were desperate to sign Manchester United attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Carragher wrote for the Daily Mail: "I remember how Brendan Rodgers was desperate to sign him for Liverpool from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer of 2013 and he was devastated that he opted for Borussia Dortmund instead.

"He was an outstanding performer in Germany and the signs are he will be the same for United.

"Everything he has done over the past seven days bodes well for the future and Jose Mourinho could do with him turning it on again on Sunday against Tottenham."
