Jamie Carragher hailed his Liverpool teammates after their battling Europa League victory at Trabzonspor.
The veteran defender admits Roy Hodgson's men may have made life difficult for themselves but he was pleased with their response in what was an intense atmosphere.
"It was very tough because they are a really good side," Carragher told liverpoolfc.tv.
"They showed that in the first leg at Anfield. Our idea was to come here, try to get a clean sheet and pinch a goal. They made a great start though and I think we showed great character and concentration to play in that atmosphere in Europe.
"It's what European football is all about. You go to different countries and experience different cultures. Turkey is famous for that type of thing and it adds to a great game."
He added: "We didn't just go through. We beat them on their own patch and without some of our top players. With that in mind it's a great result."
