Cardiff boss Mackay: I spoke to Fergie about working with foreign owners

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay has revealed he's close to former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

His father played with Ferguson at Queens Park and Mackay has benefited from a close relationship with a man he admires.

"When I first came to England, he made an effort with me," he recalled to the Daily Mail.

"He was available on the phone for five minutes here and there. But I'm not the only one he does that for.

"The best time was the night before the Carling Cup final when he phoned me up.

"He was, like: 'Have you got ten minutes for me to talk you through the Liverpool team?'

"I just said: 'Yes please'. It was excellent. He went through every player, strengths and weaknesses.

"He has been here, too. He came in. He wanted a cup of tea and a shortbread.

"It's a huge lesson for me. Any time over the last four years when I have needed ten minutes to talk an issue through with him he has been there. I like to think I haven't abused it.

"I had talked to him previously about dealing with a foreign owner, a new owner. He had dealt with the Glazers and I asked him for advice about that. I haven't talked to him about the recent situation, though."
