Captaincy has helped Brown pull his head in - ex-Celtic midfielder Hartley

Former Celtic midfielder Paul Hartley believes that Scott Brown has improved out of sight as a player since he took the club captaincy.

Hartley played with Brown at Parkhead when the midfielder joined from Hibernian in 2007 and ahead of tomorrow night's Champions League meeting with Benfica, the Alloa manager praised his former teammate for becoming a much more mature person on the pitch.

"Scott is still daft as a brush, but as a player he has matured. His discipline is a lot better than it was," Hartley said.

"When he first came into the team he picked up a lot of bookings, but over the last 18 months that side has improved.

"He doesn't dive into silly tackles and I think being made captain has probably helped him to calm down.

"People will look up to him as the leader and he has to set an example.

"He has always been a good player, but he has got better with age and the captaincy has been a big factor."
