Etienne Capoue admits he signed for Tottenham to make France's World Cup squad.
Capoue, who joined from Toulouse for £9m last week, came off the bench for victory at Crystal Palace.
"I needed to go abroad and I had the chance to play in the best championship in the world," said the 25-year-old. "Tottenham is the perfect club to make another step forward in my career.
"If you want to succeed, you have to take risks in life! Even if it is a World Cup year, it is my choice and I take that responsibility. You need competition in a squad. If you are good, you play. You have to work for that. It is a big club but with a family spirit. I have been really well welcomed. If I don't play, I will give everything to win my place."
