Chelsea trailed three times but rallied to take the game into extra time and finally overcome Manchester United 5-4 at Stamford Bridge and progress to the quarter finals of the League Cup. A game containing nine bookings and three penalties was never as fractious as might appear and certainly there was relief all round that the game was not as controversial as the meeting in the League on Sunday.
Manchester United made ten changes to the team which visited Stamford Bridge at the weekend, and it was this youthful line-up which eventually struggled to cope with Chelsea's more experienced strikers.
Three times United took the lead through Ryan Giggs, Javier Hernandez and Nani, only to be pegged back by a David Luiz penalty, Gary Cahill and a last minute Eden Hazard spot kick.
In extra time the hosts took control with Daniel Sturridge and Ramires getting on the scoresheet only for Giggs to set up a nervy last couple of minutes with another penalty.
