CAPITAL ONE CUP WRAP - 3rd Round: Liverpool in penalty thriller, Southampton dump Arsenal, Everton leak more goals

10 of the 16 fixtures of the 2014/15 Capital One Cup third round were played on Tuesday night with three Premier League clubs exiting at the hands of top flight rivals.

In the most fascinating match of the night, Liverpool edged Middlesbrough 14-13 in a thrilling penalty shootout at Anfield which came after a 2-2 draw at the end of extra-time.

17-year old Jordan Rossiter opened the scoring for the Reds in the 10th minute of his debut before Adam Reach levelled for Boro just after the hour-mark.

The impressive Suso then edged Liverpool ahead in the 109th minute after the game was forced into extra-time but their Championship opponents managed to equalise in the final minute of the 120 courtesy of a penalty from Chelsea loanee Patrick Bamford.

That pushed the contest to a shootout and it certainly lived up to its name with 27 attempts from 12 yards beating the respective goalkeepers Simon Mignolet and Jamal Blackman who also converted their spot kicks.

In the end, however, Albert Adomah missed his sudden death chance to allow Liverpool a path through to the final 16 by the skin of their teeth.

Southampton scored a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium thanks to a stunning winner from Nathaniel Clyne.

The Saints fell behind in the 14th minute when Alexis Sanchez struck with a superb 25-yard free-kick but Dusan Tadic levelled six minutes later after Tomas Rosicky had fouled Sadio Mane in the area.

Enter the impressive Clyne who rattled home a 30-yard strike five minutes before the break which was enough for the south coast outfit to progress to the next phase.

Fellow Premier League side Everton were again leaking goals as they lost 3-0 to Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium as Nathan Dyer, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Marvin Emnes struck for the Welsh club.

In other matches, Sheffield United edged League One rivals Leyton Orient 1-0 at Brisbane Road, Cardiff City crashed at home 3-0 to AFC Bournemouth, Derby County got the better of Reading 2-0, giant-killers MK Dons carried on their winning form to beat Bradford City 2-0, League Two outfit Shrewsbury Town upset Championships side Norwich City 1-0 and Fulham finally had some joy with a 2-1 home triumph over Doncaster Rovers.

And Marc Muniesa was the unlikely hero as Stoke City overturned an early deficit to beat league rivals Sunderland 2-1 at the Stadium of Light.

Wednesday nights fixtures are as follows:

Chelsea (PREM) v Bolton (CHA) Crystal Palace (PREM) v Newcastle United (PREM) Manchester City (PREM) v Sheffield Wednesday (CHA) Burton Albion (L2) v Brighton & Hove Albion (CHA) Tottenham (PREM) v Nottingham Forest (CHA) West Bromwich Albion (PREM) v Hull City (PREM)
