England coach Fabio Capello wants Jack Wilshere and Andy Carroll to go to the U21 European Championships.
The Italian is backing Stuart Pearce, who wants to pick England's best players for the European Under-21 Championship finals in Denmark this summer.
But that will mean a fight with Arsenal chief Arsene Wenger and Liverpool's Kenny Dalglish.
England boss Capello said of Wilshere: "The European Under- 21s is a really important tournament. This is a decision for Stuart Pearce and the manager of Arsenal. Wilshere is playing a lot of games this season and he is a really important player for Arsenal.
"But now he is very important for us and also the Under-21s.
"Wilshere wants to play, I can tell you."
As for Carroll, he added: "Carroll didn't play for two months and it is possible it is good for him to play more games."
