England coach Fabio Capello was shocked by the three-match ban for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney. Capello's immediate reaction to learning his star player will miss all the group games at Euro 2012 was to exclaim: "Oh my God!"

Manchester United star Rooney, 25, was sent off in the 74th minute of the 2-2 draw in Montenegro last Friday, a result which saw Capello's men qualify for next summer's championships in Poland and Ukraine.

Capello has told friends he is angry with himself for playing Rooney in a match England only needed to draw in order to qualify and last night's shocked reaction is another indication of how badly he feels about the whole affair.

"He is not very happy," said a close friend. Capello now has to decide if it is worth taking Rooney to next year's finals.

Asked after the game if it would be worth selecting him if the ban was three matches, Capello said: "Good question."
