Capello insists amazing England performance no surprise

England boss Fabio Capello insists he was unsurprised by their performance in last night's stunning 4-1 win in Croatia.

"The result is better than I expected but not the performance," said Capello.

"I said yesterday there was a lot of confidence among the players and we've worked very well for the 10 days that we've stayed together.

"This result is great but it's just a start. It was a good performance, a good result - but it's only one victory, not more.

"I was also pleased for Rooney to score. He is moving into form now."

Theo Walcott, 19, blasted the first competitive England hat-trick since Michael Owen destroyed Germany seven years ago.

But boss Capello warned: "After Andorra I said he would play fantastic games but he would not play at the same level all the games.

"He's very young and you have to help him. And when he doesn't play so well, we must support him."

Walcott's goals put England firmly on the road to qualification for the 2010 World Cup.

And Capello said: "When he plays like this it's fantastic. He was very dangerous for their defenders and when you are facing someone like Walcott it is not easy with his pace."
