England coach Fabio Capello intends to defy Everton and play Phil Jagielka against Spain on Saturday.
The Sun says Capello is worried about a potential backlash if he selects Chelsea's John Terry, who is currently under police investigation for allegedly making racist remarks at Anton Ferdinand.
The Merseyside club warned the England camp last week that Jagielka had a fractured toe and needed an injection every time he played.
He has also been unable to train properly between matches.
Sources at Everton claim England agreed not to select their star defender so that he could have a fortnight to recover. Now they believe England have gone back on their word.
Jagielka is caught in the middle. He does not want to be seen to be pulling out of a squad and is prepared to play.
