Campbell upbeat about Notts County debut, despite defeat

Former Arsenal and Tottenham defender Sol Campbell says he enjoyed his Notts County debut, despite defeat to Morecambe.

"Maybe teams are raising their game against us, but we have got to expect that," he said after completing his first full 90 minutes since stepping off the pitch for Portsmouth at Wigan in the Premier League on the final day of last season.

"We need to step above that and we can't go around thinking teams are going to lie down for us. We have to earn the right to play and the right to win. We need to work on a lot of things.

"I didn't enjoy the result, but I enjoyed being back. It wasn't really a culture shock for me coming here. I have played at grounds like this before, although it was usually in pre-season or in the FA Cup.

"I was a bit rusty, but that was only natural. I have not had a pre-season behind me, but I'm working hard and making sure I am doing the right things to catch up with the fitness of the rest of the lads.

"I didn't think I was too bad today. I got in a couple of tackles and I was moving the ball well. But I have to get used to the other players in the team and work out what they want. There are encouraging signs."
