Cairns mayor Cr Margaret Cochrane has labeled her town as a perfect place to host A-League club North Queensland Fury if it needs to relocate.

The Fury, currently based in Townsville, are in financial turmoil as they operate under the ownership of Football Federation Australia and there are strong rumours that the club may not be in existence next season.

But Cr Cochrane spoke to the Cairns Post and said that the Fury would definitely work in Cairns.

"I think the support base would be there. It would be our second national league team," Cr Cochrane said.

"We only have basketball.

"To have an outdoor sport in a football arena and having soccer as a national league, I think Cairns could sustain a football league team."

Cr Cochrane did state, however, that a venue would need to be constructed for the idea to actually come to fruition.

"We still have to get a rectangular stadium," she said.

"That is the crux of the whole deal.

"We've got to get a rectangular stadium where we can genuinely host major rugby league games and major soccer games."
