Gretna have been cleared to sign former Vancouver Whitecaps and Newcastle goalkeeper Tony Caig.

Caig has signed on amateur terms until January. The Scottish Premier League had initially objected to the 33-year-old joining outside the transfer window.

Caig has been training with Gretna after leaving Canada in June under the impression he could sign with the Premier League newcomers.

But he had three months of his contract remaining with the Whitecaps and they refused to release him before the transfer deadline on 31 August.
