Buy-out deadline passes for Newcastle's Owen

Newcastle United boss Sam Allardyce has breathed a sigh of relief after Michael Owen's contract deadline passed yesterday without a bid arriving.

It was revealed by former Newcastle United chairman Freddie Shepherd at the weekend that a clause, which would allow the England striker to move on for £9.5m, was due to expire last night.

On Monday Allardyce quipped: "If that's the case then someone only has until Tuesday!"
