Nicky Butt says that there was never any doubt in his mind that he would put pen to paper on a new contract with Newcastle.

The 32-year-old signed a one-year extension to his current deal last week with the option of a further 12 months beyond that expiry.

"I've said all along that I wanted to stay here and extend my contract," said the former Man Utd ace.

"I'm happy to get it sorted and, to be honest, I always knew it would be.

"When I first signed from Man Utd I said that this was the only club I would have left for.

"It's a great club with huge potential and we have to try to help fulfil that.

"There's a lot of great lads in our dressing room and we have a good team spirit.

"It's been up and down this season but have to find a level of consistency that we know we're capable of."

However, Butt admitted that he thought his Newcastle United playing days were over after spending the 2005/06 campaign on loan at Birmingham City.

"When I was down at Birmingham I probably didn't think I'd be returning to Newcastle," he added.

"But I came back, got my head down and worked hard and had a good season.

"I'm very happy with the way things have gone for me over the past 18 months and hopefully that will continue," he told the clubs official website.
