Butland catches eye in poor Birmingham Cup defeat

Birmingham coach Terry Westley was unimpressed with his young players after their Birmingham Senior Cup elimination by Leamington this week.

Westley admitted that some of his young charges failed to make the most of their opportunity to impress in the 3-2 defeat.

He told Birmingham's website: "If you start from the back, we wanted to give Jack Butland a game in goal, instead of Colin Doyle, so that he was involved in a more high profile match.

"He deserved that chance with his recent performances and I thought he was one of the few players to come out with any credit, along with the schoolboy Mitch Hancox at left-back.

"But the ones that have been crying out to have a game and to be given the opportunity let themselves down and didn't do well enough."
