Butcher: Everton youngster Stones has England leadership qualities

Terry Butcher has tipped Everton star John Stones to become the future captain of the England national team.

Stones is rated as one of the finest young English defenders right now and has been touted to have a big future in the game.

Former England captain Terry Butcher is also one of the many who is a big admirer of Stones and the 56-year old has backed the young defender to assume the England captaincy in the future.

Butcher told the Liverpool Echo: "I like him, he's got good ability, he's quick and he's sharp, he reads things well. He's mature beyond his years. He's one who you would say will assume that role [as a leader] but who plays alongside him?

"Look at Phil Jones, eventually he'll get there but we've been saying this now for some time and injuries are a problem for him. Jones and Stones could work together but he's got to prove himself at Manchester United first and have a consistent run."
