Former England captain Terry Butcher is ready to join Scotland boss George Burley's backroom staff.

Butcher, a popular figure north of the Border, was targeted for a part-time assistant coaching role by his former Ipswich Town team-mate Burley and spent Monday locked in talks with Scottish Football Association officials at Hampden.

Steven Pressley, who has also been earmarked for a position alongside Burley in his new set-up, also held discussions at Hampden, but has yet to confirm whether he will take up the offer of a post.

Burley said: "For me, the criteria was someone I knew really well who had played international football, who was a good coach, an excellent motivator, somebody I could trust.

"Terry certainly comes into that category and he's spent most of his football time in Scotland. That was important as well. For me he's a winner. He's got the character where he doesn't stand for fools."

Butcher said yesterday: "All the people I've talked to have told me that George has gone for the football person in me - not the nationality."

Despite murmurs from certain disgruntled factions of the Tartan Army, Butcher is a figure who commanded huge respect as a player and a manager in Scotland, notably during his time at Motherwell.
