He could provide competition for Ben Mee, who had a difficult Premier League debut at left back against Chelsea.
Ward is capable of playing at full back, in a wide midfield role or even in support of a lone striker.
But asked what he saw as his best position, he told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph: “I think predominantly left back.
“The manager wants competition everywhere.
“I think that’s what you need when you get promoted.
“It’s a very tough season and you need competition in every position and strong competition to keep everyone on their toes.
“I think he’s building a squad that's getting towards two players for every position, which is what you need because when you’re out there on that training pitch you need everyone to be on the same page.
“You can get hampered with injuries and suspensions and players need to be ready to come in, especially at this level.”
