Burnley midfielder Joey Barton admits Dimitri Payet's impact at West Ham surprised him.

Barton was aware of Payet when he spent a season with Olympique Marseille.

Speaking with JDD , he said of the OM star: "He was incredible last season with West Ham, which surprised everyone, including me.

"When I was at OM and he in Lille, he was seen only against Sochaux or Brest, never in the big games. Same in Marseille after. But in England, he was different from his first game.

"Except in the end, no big club had positioned itself for him. It was China or Marseille. Why? We focus too much on a player when he works well, we do not give enough importance to how he behaves in difficulty.

"If we look at Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] in Paris, he has been very consistent. It is the mark of a great."
