The forward joined Burnley last week on-loan.
"It was touch and go because a player of Nathan's ability and with such a great background there are always going to be other clubs that would want him," Eddie Howe's right hand man told the Lancashire Telegraph.
"He was top of the wish list.
"But he only became available on the morning that we managed to secure his services so there were a lot of phonecalls to agents and coaching staff at Aston Villa.
"The gaffer managed to speak to Nathan and express his feelings to him and tell him a little bit about the club and the way we like to do things, and I think that played a big part in securing him at Burnley.
"We were competing against quite a few other Championship clubs and we managed to secure his services.
"We're just delighted that he decided to come to Burnley and I'm sure he's going to be a big player for us."
