Burnley keeper Pope desperate for first England cap

Nick Pope is hoping he can make his England debut against Nigeria on Saturday.

The Burnley shot-stopper pipped Tom Heaton and Joe Hart to make Gareth Southgate's final World Cup, despite never making an England appearance.

Pope was an unused substitute in the Three Lions' last two friendlies, but he hopes he can win his first cap at Wembley this weekend.

"The friendlies are what you're looking at really now," he told the Lancashire Telegraph. The first game is when everyone wants to have the shirt but the two games coming up will decide who plays that first game.

"They're what you keep your focus on really. Get to the first of these next two games and see how it goes and prepare myself as best as I can in the next two weeks in training to give myself the best chance of getting on the pitch."
