Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton has spoken of leaving Manchester United.
Heaton faces his former club today.
Heaton was Manchester United's third-choice goalkeeper in 2008 when they beat Chelsea on penalties at the Luzhniki Stadium to win the Champions League. But even though he celebrated the victory, he knew it was the beginning of the end for him at the club he joined at 11.
“I didn't make the bench in Moscow, I was one of the six in the stand," said Heaton, who sat out the game alongside Danny Welbeck, Chris Eagles and Park Ji Sung.
“You've trained every day, travelled everywhere that full season - but not played a minute.
“It's not that you feel a fraud, but I wanted to be involved, almost a main man if you like.
“That was always the dream for me - to be out there on the pitch.
“I grew up at United but that feeling of wanting to play week in, week out never left me."
When he did finally make the break two years later Heaton got the hairdryer treatment from Sir Alex Ferguson, even though he had never picked him for a single game.
“He gave me pretty short shrift," said the 30-year-old. “I understood, I was leaving on a free.
“But three weeks later he had me back in and said he respected my decision. It meant the world to me.
“I saw him at the training ground here - you stand a bit straighter and call him boss still. All the lads were giving me grief for it."
