Burnley hero Nugent ready to show Spurs boss Redknapp what he missed

Portsmouth striker David Nugent says he's joined Burnley to get himself back into the England squad.

Nugent said: "Two goals on my home debut is a great start and keeps the home form going for Burnley. Play me as a striker and I'll score. I'm not a winger.

"I played the odd game for Portsmouth up front, in which I scored goals, but all of a sudden I'd get put back on the wing for the formation.

"I don't see why I cannot play for England again if my goalscoring record keeps improving.

"Ever since I got that England cap, it has been downhill. But hopefully I can rekindle my career at Burnley, catch some eyes and get back in the squad.

"I want to show Portsmouth fans and the people down there what they've been missing. It has been difficult to keep my confidence up. It has been so frustrating, not playing any games. I thought it was time to move away, start enjoying my football again and score some goals."

He added: "I scored last year for Portsmouth at White Hart Lane but I've no qualms about Harry Redknapp. He didn't fancy me as a player and that's it. I had a bit of trouble there. But managers have their opinions and can do what they want. With luck I can prove another manager wrong.

"Harry kept buying strikers, such as Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Benjani, and John Utaka. I was trying my best in training but it wasn't good enough.

"I'd love to make the move to Burnley permanent. I don't think Portsmouth's the club for me."
