Burnley defender James Tarkowski admits he could be playing for Poland.
The centre-back was eligible to play for the Poles due to his grandfather Boleslaw, a tank driver in the Second World War.
But despite being tempted, he waited for his England chance instead. Even the pleading of his cousin Pav could not sway him and he was rewarded for his patience at the age of 25 with his first-ever England call-up last week.
“I don't feel very Polish myself but I have got quite a few relatives on my dad and his cousin's side," he said.
“I don't speak Polish or eat Polish food but I have been to Poland a couple of times.
“I know that side of the family, I have met people.
“But I have always seen myself as English, it is only the name that is around me really.
“I speak to my cousin Pav quite a lot. We share the same surname and he obviously wanted me to play for Poland.
“But once I got the call-up he sent me a message straight away to say congratulations. So it is not something he is going to hold against me.
“I have always seen myself as an English person and I'm sitting here in the kit now."
