Burnley captaincy sits well with Heaton

Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton admits he was delighted to be handed the club captaincy.

Following the departure of Jason Shackell to Derby County this summer, the Clarets' captain's armband had been up for grabs.

It was Heaton who led the Lancashire club out for their Championship opener against Leeds United on the weekend and the new Burnley skipper has revealed his pride at being handed the responsibility.

Heaton said: "It's brilliant. I'm very proud of that and honoured, it's a responsibility I'm looking forward to.

"I'm pleased the manager's given it to me. He only mentioned it to me on Friday and I said 'yes' straight away.

"It's a first for me and I'm looking forward to it. All you can do is give it your all and I'm certainly looking forward to doing that. It was a little bit of a surprise having not had it during the season, but I'm absolutely made up and I'll try to do the job some justice."

Heaton guided the Clarets to a 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road in their first game of the new Championship season.
