Bruce: Sunderland in Carling Cup to win it

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce says they will take the Carling Cup seriously this season.

"I said it at Wigan last year and I said it at Birmingham before, of course your priority has to be to stay in the Premier League - that's a given," he said ahead of this week's tie with Norwich City.

"But let's be totally realistic, we're not going to win the league - if we are going to win something, it will be a cup.

"It's a realistic chance because you only have to win five or six games. The big teams might be drawn against each other and that can make life easier for you.

"And the big boys often rest their first-team players until the semi-finals, so that means it is a possibility for the rest of us. Who knows? We need to have a cup run, in the League Cup or the FA Cup and I'm sure the supporters don't care which it is."
