Bruce fumes at Sunderland form on their travels

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is distinctly unimpressed with his player's attitude and effort away from the Stadium of Light. Bruce saw his side suffer a fifth defeat in seven away games this season - compared to a home record that has seen them win five out of seven.

This time it was a 1-0 defeat to his old club Wigan at the DW Stadium.

"If you look, it is not just this season - I think it is one win in something like 17 away games dating back to before Christmas.

"If we are going to take the club forward we have to do something about that.

"The team I see at the Stadium of Light is not the same team I saw today, or at Birmingham or at Burnley.

"It is a shadow of the team of last week and, unless that mentality changes, I am going to have to do something about it because we have let down 5,000 people here this afternoon.

"If the mentality does not change, I am going to have to change the personnel - it is as simple as that." Bruce added: "The goal we gave away summed up our performance.

"We gave the ball away twice in the middle of the park, our centre-back (Da Silva) was brushed away by Rodallega and the goalkeeper came for it when he did not have to.

"If he had stayed on his line, it was an impossible angle for the striker to score from."

The Black Cats did not manage a single shot on target against the Latics, and Bruce admitted he should have switched formation earlier than he did.

He said: "It was the same 4-5-1 formation we played against Arsenal and at Spurs, and in both those games we played really well.

"I changed it at half-time and we were slightly better with two up front - in hindsight, maybe I should have changed it sooner."
